"Tonalités boréales" takes us on a journey through the Northern Hemisphere, exploring composers from the 19th and 20th centuries. Niels Wilhelm Gade was one of Denmark’s most significant musicians of his time. Like Grieg after him, he studied in Leipzig before returning to his homeland to revive traditional folk songs. Pēteris Vasks, Arvo Pärt, and Sven-David Sandström represent Latvia, Estonia, and Sweden, respectively, offering new perspectives on Scandinavian and Baltic choral aesthetics through their works.

Contemporary creation will also be highlighted with the world premiere of Ugniavystas, a piece specially commissioned for the occasion from the young Lithuanian composer Justina Repečkaitė.

Program note

The title Ugniavystas derives from an archaic Lithuanian word describing something fire-colored, bright red, or fiery. In one of the charms, the phrase ugniavystas kraujas can be translated as “fiery blood” or “blazing red blood.”

In ancient times, injury and bleeding often meant a fatal outcome. To combat this, people developed magical incantations believed to stop the flow of blood. This piece incorporates three such healing charms, which symbolically break the connection between blood and the wound, gradually diminishing its presence. Blood is likened to a flowing river that, through incantation, must be stilled—whether by naming bloodless objects, altering its course through backwards counting, or invoking its natural cessation. The texts are drawn from Lithuanian Verbal Healing Charms, compiled by Daiva Vaitkevičienė, a volume that not only collects all known incantations but also categorizes them according to their narrative function. The chosen charms correspond to three categories, which lend their names to the movements:

I. Separation

II. Destruction

III. Cessation
