Scapegoat: Joshua Hyde (saxophone) and Noam Bierstone (percussion)
“...endless repetition without narration, the basso continuo of an unspoken aria”
Friday, April 11th: Performance of scapegoat duo featuring works by Pierluigi Billone, Justina Repečkaitė, and Mauricio Pauly.
Justina Repečkaitė's piece Ciclo Continuo will be performed as part of the scapegoat duo's upcoming concert. The performance will take place on Friday, April 11th, from 17:00 to 18:15 at KONTEJNER.
The scapegoat duo, featuring Australian saxophonist Joshua Hyde and Canadian percussionist Noam Bierstone, is known for their daring exploration of sound through original works and the integration of electronics, visual amplification, and improvisation. Their program is designed to expand the boundaries of musical experience, challenging traditional expectations.
The concert will include the following works:
Pierluigi Billone: 2 Alberi (for alto saxophone and percussion)
Justina Repečkaitė: Ciclo Continuo (for soprano saxophone and percussion)
Mauricio Pauly: The Threshing Floor (for tenor saxophone, percussion, and electronics)
In Ciclo Continuo, Justina Repečkaitė explores the concept of endless repetition, creating a soundscape that emphasizes the process of looping without narrative. This "basso continuo" of unspoken sound gestures forms a continuous, evolving sonic atmosphere. The percussion and saxophone pair in a new, hybrid timbre, where repetition becomes a ritual, devoid of conventional dialogue.
Ciclo Continuo’s instrumentation. Premiered by Duo Dubois.

Festival
Since its founding in 1961, Music Biennale Zagreb has continually kept abreast of global developments and has been in contact with the great figures of the music scene, explored different approaches to contemporary music and shaped its trends. Its founding was a testament to the national recognition of the great value of contemporary music of Croatian composers and the need to place it within an international context. At the time, it stood alongside the then relatively new but revolutionary festivals such as Warsaw Autumn, where the world discovered Krzysztof Penderecki, or the Zagreb Animafest, the founding of which was a direct result of the internationally recognized excellence of the Zagreb School of Animated Films.
