Program note
The title Echo Chamber alludes to a space where sounds and ideas are reflected back and forth, evolving in the process. For the Linos Festival, I was asked to write a piano trio to mirror my 2016 composition Unbenannt-2 for string quartet, which will be performed at the same concert at Santa Clara Keller. I was intrigued by the idea of creating a dialogue between the two pieces, using this new composition to reflect and expand on the abstract atmosphere of Unbenannt-2. Echo Chamber explores both the literal acoustical echoes and the metaphorical reflection of ideas, inviting deeper contemplation on how sound and perception interact. In the piano part, the pianist plays notes with a delay effect, repeating them with a fading echo. This echo interacts with the sounds of the string instruments, which also incorporate quarter tones. The harmony is built on an inverted harmonic spectrum, exploring the friction between small intervals and introducing virtual fundamentals to enrich the sonic landscape.
“INTRODUCING the "inviting, gritty, and lustrous" sound world of Justina Repečkaitė. Described as having "many similarities to a diamond", the Lithuanian-born composer's music has been performed globally, including at the Centre Pompidou and on ARTE. A graduate of IRCAM in Paris, she has collaborated with renowned ensembles like Ensemble Intercontemporain and the BBC Philharmonic. Since its first season, the Linos Festival has featured a new commission every year, and we are honoured to present the world premiere of her latest work at our opening VERSUS concert on 20.09. This new piano trio, part of the Linos Piano Trio’s mission to expand the repertoire, will be paired with her string quartet Unbenannt-2. Don’t miss it and get your tickets at linosfestival.de!”
